December 14, 1912, ROC government officially permit men to keep concubines. Keeping concubine used to be a common habit in many places of non-Christian world. Despite China accepted Western influence to change the political system, the social custom could hardly be changed all at once. Thus the custom of keeping concubine remained a issue for the gender historians of the modern period to study.
