January 6, 1855, the French Army helped the Qing Army to attack the walled city of Shanghai controlled by Small Sword Society. In the beginning the joint army was defeated, but more than a month later, the Small Sword Society was eventually destroyed due to their limited resources. Small Sword Society was a secretary society revolving during the Taiping Rebellion. Once it controlled Shanghai and the adjacent area.
