February 27, 1876, Japan and Korea signed the Kanghwa Treaty. This is Korea's first unequal treaty, granting consular jurisdiction to Japan, and denying Korea's role in the Chinese tribute system. This treaty was the first step of Korea's future annexation in 1910.
