March 8, 1835, Ruan Yuan was appointed Grand Secretariat. He was top of politic and academic world at the same time. As a major figure in the evidential research tradition, Ruan was not only familiar with traditional texts, but also know about astronomy and mathematics taught by the Jesuits.
