Abstract:
Within most of the relationships between the US and Taiwan, the US took the initiative. This book traces the relationship between the two countries from the early American acquaintance with Taiwan and the beginning of contact, continuing through the early stages of American merchants arriving in Taiwan, Americans' intentions with regard to Taiwan, negotiations about opening Taiwan’s ports to trade, to each stage of the relationship between the two sides after the Taiwanese opened ports for trade.
