Abstract:
This book describes the way in which Tsinghua University rapidly developed into an elite institution nine years before the War of Resistance against Japan. The factors for its development included excellent administrators with great leadership styles, abundant and stable funding, a first-class teaching and research environment, strong faculty, liberal tradition and a system of allowing faculty to rotate administrative duties, and rigorous general education. Through its excellent policies and tradition of academic freedom, Tsinghua did not openly condemn governmental inference, but tolerated underground political activity among its students, many of whom offered significant contributions to society after graduation.
