Dr Kuan-Jen Chen’s book Charting America’s Cold War Waters in East Asia: Sovereignty, Local Interests, and International Security has been awarded the 41st Masayoshi Ōhira Memorial Prize. This prize recognises outstanding scholarship that contributes to the “Pacific Basin Cooperation Concept” advocated by former Japanese Prime Minister Masayoshi Ōhira. Drawing on primary sources in Chinese, English, and Japanese, Dr Chen’s book explores how the US shaped the Cold War in the Western Pacific, its interactions with East Asian countries, and the challenges it faced. In awarding his book this year’s prize, the Masayoshi Ōhira Memorial Foundation recognises Dr Chen’s contributions to the understanding of the Pacific Basin Cooperation Concept.
