    Abstract:
This book primarily discusses Chang Chitung's understanding of diplomacy and the measures he took. It also analyzes the formation of his theory of “Chinese learning for fundamental principles and Western learning for practical application,” his practice of initiating diplomacy with those far away and attacking those nearby: allying with the Japanese to resist the Russians, tying up the British and Japanese and other theories. It also investigates the relationship between South-East Mutual Protection and the US mutual open door policy towards China. Aside from this, it also touches on his attitude towards the Boxers and the causes of his proposal of the opening of three eastern provinces to trade. The book has a penetrating analysis of Chang Chitung's diplomatic experience and principles; it is a work which simply must be read by anyone researching Chang Chitung's thought.
