He was an important figure in modern Chinese history who held positions in academia, politics, diplomacy, and other areas, holding many important posts. In the period of the Second Sino-Japanese War, he supported Chiang Kai-Shek while simultaneously bearing the heavy responsibility of serving as the Head of the KMT Central Propaganda Department, as well as being the head of or senior aide in 6 others. In 1962, he took up the post of president of Academia Sinica. He placed great emphasis on the participation in politics of scholars and on the preservation historic material and he left a large number of documents that are now precious direct materials for researching modern history.
