Lu Miaw-fen, 2011, Ruling All under Heaven with Filial Piety: The Xiaojing in Late Imperial China, 395 pages, Taipei: Linking Publishing Co., Ltd.

Abstract:
This monograph examines the relationship between the Xiaojing (The Classic of Filial Piety) and the political and social culture of late imperial China. Taking the diverse nature of the Xiaojing into account, Lu Miaw-fen looks at this text from a variety of different perspectives, including political history, classical studies, education and intellectual history, gender issues, and ritual practices, with her results revealing the complex historical situations in which the Xiaojing intertwined with people’s lives. Apart from the Introduction and Conclusion, the book includes nine main chapters covering over one thousand years of history, although the Ming-Qing era is its primary focus. This study is the first in-depth monograph dealing with the cultural history of the Xiaojing, not only illuminating certain key aspects of Chinese filial culture but also the issue of Chinese modernity.
