Mr. Kuo Ting-Yee, style named as “Liang-Yu”, was born in Wuyang, Henan, on Jan. 12, 1940. He graduated from Department of History, National Southeast University. Then, he taught at schools such as Tsing Hua University. In 1947, he came to Taiwan, and then he taught at schools such as National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University in succession. In January, 1955, he was designated to prepare for the establishment of the Institute of Modern History under Academia Sinica. He served as the first Institute Chief. In 1968, he was elected as one of the academicians in Academia Sinica. In 1969, he went to give lectures in USA. He died in New York on Sep. 14, 1975. He had lived for 72 years. During the period when Mr. Kuo was hosting the Institute of Modern History, he actively cultivated research talent and expanded international academic exchanges. He worked hard and undertook the planning, and he did great contribution. Mr. Kuo indeed played the role of the key to the start-up researches on Modern History in Taiwan’s academia. Although his life was unfortunately cut short and he was unable to see the flourishing development of the Institute of Modern History afterward, students of young generations often think of him, to remember his great contribution. In January 2004, it happened to be Mr. Kuo’s centennial birthday. In remembrance of him, the colleagues in this Institute made this documentary film, so as to expound and propagate Mr. Kuo’s career and feats.
