Name
New Year's Eve in an Old Movie
Date
2013-12-30
Introduction
On December 31th, 1932, the Peide Department store announced that the store would open until 5 pm this day, and close on New Year’s day. The clerks did not rest at home after work, but went to a Chinese theater or a western ballroom to celebrate the New Year’s eve. The clips are from Cosmetic Market, a film first run on May 15, 1933 at Shanghai. The film realistically depicted how the urbanites celebrated the New Year’s eve, The posters of the theater in the film indicated the most famous Peking opera actors, Mei Lanfang and Ma Lianliang, was appearing on the stage. This is not fully fabricated because the two actors did perform at Shanghai on the 1933 New Year’s eve. The lunar year of 1932 is the year of monkey, and the next year is the year of chicken. It is the implication of the scene of a chicken driving a monkey away. After the cock crowed, all the people danced with the Maine Stein Song, and celebrated the coming of new year. How will you celebrate the New Year’s eve?
