摘要:
本文在前人研究的基礎上,以梵蒂岡檔案館近年解密的文獻為據,深入探討教廷1949年對華的重要政策,即指示中國的天主教神職人員在危難時刻「堅守崗位」,牧者不應棄羊逃跑;尚在各地修院受訓的修生,可撤出中國繼續學業。以身作則留在南京的教廷駐華公使黎培理,起初因反對修生撤離而被指為本地神職的「劊子手」。駐香港的公使館秘書要求逃亡出來的神職人員返回原地,同樣背負罵名。
本文梳理政策形成的來龍去脈後發現,教廷決定讓修生撤離,並非過去認為的完全是首位華人樞機田耕莘向教宗請願的成果,黎公使改變立場發揮了關鍵作用。儘管先行研究指出大部分神職人員在政權更替之際留守崗位,這段歷史因史料不足尚有許多空白。本文透過公使館給教廷的報告、書信、報刊及其他檔案史料,探究政策的實際執行情況,並發掘過去未觸及的個案,重新審視堅守崗位的意義與爭議。
