Abstract:
The concept of the West is a key concept of modern Chinese political and social thought. Although its relevance for Chinese reflections on modernity and the modern world order can hardly be overestimated, there is, to date, no comprehensive study on the emergence and transformations of the Chinese concept of the West. The present talk casts a light on the basic features of the Chinese concept of the West, while at the same time examining the development that preceded current Chinese perceptions of the West as China’s historic antagonist. This recent conceptual shift needs to be understood in the context of major changes that occurred in the course of the twentieth century.
