Workshop Objectives: This workshop originates from the 70th-anniversary celebration event series of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. In conjunction with the “Reframing Modern Histories Across the Taiwan Strait: Entanglements, Divergences, and Global Connections Conference,” co-hosted by the Institute and the Historical Society for Twentieth-Century China (HSTCC), we invite scholars from home and abroad to gather for a one-day workshop following the three-day conference. Drawing upon the core concerns of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) studies and the foundational historical research of science and technology in East Asia, this event focuses on a historical question worthy of more exploration: How have science, technology, and medicine participated in shaping the contours of modern East Asia? To address this issue, we hope to use a long-term view and the lens of “Co-production” to explore the unique subjectivity and local characteristics that emerged as East Asia adopted modern science and technology. Furthermore, this workshop aims to expand its scope, building upon well-established themes to include other topics currently less examined yet crucial to modern East Asian history. Through these scholarly exchanges, we seek to re-examine the disciplinary and conceptual genealogy of Technoscience in East Asia, thereby opening up broader dialogues on the Global History of Science.
