November 15, 1864, Li Hongzhang came to Nanking. Zeng Guofan discussed with him about the plan to dismiss the Xiang Army and replace it with Li's Huai Army. From then on the Huai Army became the main force of the Qing Empire until the defeat of First Sino-Japanese War. Even though, the later influential Beiyang Army was still constructed based on the personnels of the Huai Army. It enjoyed an essential role in late Qing and early Republican history.
