November 17, 1843, Shanghai was formally opened as treaty port, symbolizing that China started to open its door toward the marine World. This is a milestone in Chinese history. Researchers in our institute organized "Chinese Urban History Research Group". One of its goals is to explore the impacts on China brought about opening the port in Shanghai. Some of their outstanding research finding could be viewed in The City and Chinese Modernity.
