 A smallpox goddess worshipped in the Qing period: Xun xiang hua jie

December 18, 1874, the Tongzhi Emperor ordered that he suffered smallpox and needed a good rest, therefore the empresses dowagers acted as substitute for him. Soon later the emperor passed away. Many common people believed that he died of syphilis. However, from the information of time, the emperor could not died with this reason. The doubtful issues about his passing away was not limited to disease only. Regarding the succession of the throne, there were also some different versions. To clarify this issue, our research finding has also some contributions: Chin Cheng-yi, "An Analysis of the Emperor T'ung Chih's Posthumous Edict Naming Tsai Shu As Emperor".
