January 18, 1914, the National Government appointed the direct line of Confucius' descendent as the officiating priest of Confucius, and similar treatments to other Confucius sages such as Yan Hui's, Zeng Shen's, Zisi's, and Mencius' descendent. Along the dynasties, China has worshipped Confucius. Confucius serves as central figure of orthodox transmissions and scholarly transmissions. His role could hardly be overthrown simply with the fall of the imperial system. Before the Republican period, Qing intellectuals have thought over Confucianism and developed new thoughts, rather than simply following the past.
