February 4, 1865, Robert Swinhoe was promoted to be consul in Takao. Swinhoe's records in diplomacy are not as significant as his contributions to natural history. Over 1/3 of today's recorded bird species in Taiwan are first reported by him. Observing birds and hunting birds are both British customs. They also brought the custom from Britain to China.
