March 23, 1916, Yuan Shikai announced to cancel the reign name Hongxian. This year was still Republican 5th year. Not long later he passed away in disgrace. In his earlier years, Yuan contributed greatly to the Qing Empire, and the famous figures such as Li Hongzhang highly evaluated him. Regretfully he coveted the throne and defamed himself.
