June 4, 1928, Zhang Zuolin's car encountered bombs when it advance near Huanggutun in Fengtian. Zhang passed away next day. This incident is broadly believed to be plotted by Japanese Army. Zhang occupied Manchuria and dealt with other warlords and Japan, Russia for a certain period. He was a key person to understand the Manchuria issues in the early Republican period.
