August 9, 1880, Charles George Gordon, Commander of the "Ever Victorious Army" left China. In 1884 he died in Sudan in a battle. Gordon received the highest military rank of Capital General for his achievements in the Taiping Rebellion. He had also contributed to the Self-strengthening Movement.
