January 3, 1843, Wei Yuan's Illustrated Gazette of Overseas Countries was completed. Wei Yuan is a brilliant figure in the late Qing. This book based on Lin Zexu's Gazette of Four Continents and expanded to introduce history and geography of the world. In the book he advocated to learn the learn advanced Western technology in order to successfully fight back against foreign invasion.
