    Abstract:
This book explores three intertwined themes. First, Westerners advocated for political reform in China with the aim of spreading Christian evangelism and international trade, thereby attempting to influence China’s political and diplomatic policies. Second, reformers and progressive officials emphasized not only internal reform, but also the need to recognize the international status of Great Brittan and Japan. Finally and most importantly, after the Coup of 1898, Britain and Japan offered asylum to such intellectuals as Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, and assisted them in their activities overseas. After an in-depth examination, this book successfully uncovers connections between internal politics and international affairs in the aftermath of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95.
