Abstract:
All of the problems in which modern China met difficulties were connected to diplomacy. Within diplomacy, trade and religion can be considered the most important parts. As the Chinese saw it, the damage caused by proselytizing of religion far exceeded that of trade. Furthermore, factually speaking, all of the problems caused by proselytizing were extremely serious throughout the entire later Qing period. Aside from investigating the causes of anti- clericalism among the officials and gentry, this book also draws attention to certain deficiencies and problems which existed in politics and society at the time.
