Abstract:
Since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Jesuits introduced rapid developments in Western astronomy and mathematics to China. However, traditional Chinese learning retained its utility and uniqueness and did not readily blend with Western studies. This book employs an historical perspective to examine the significance and impact of the importation of Western astronomy and mathematics into China Western days. Under what circumstances did China beginning to adopt Western science? What was the response to the use of Western science in terms of political and intellectual thought? What was its role in the course of modernizing China?
