Abstract:
This book attempts to use the example of the Pinghan Railway to discuss the role played by railways in the process of China's economic development. The author has discovered that in as much as the railway promoted commercialization of agriculture, it made the income of the villagers increase; it was also conducive to the emigration of excess population to the North- East, which relieved the population pressure in north China. Where the promotion of trade between areas is concerned, it was conducive to the integration of China’s domestic market. However, the economic problems of modern China were very complicated, and could not be resolved by simply lowering transportation fees. Thus, the help which the railways gave China's economic development cannot be compared to that in the West.
