Abstract:
Lin Xiantang (Lin Hsientang)'s diaries are Taiwan's most precious privately held historical materials. They begin in 1927 and finish in 1955 and, apart from 1928 and 1936 for which there is no diary, stretch for 27 years, covering the periods of Japanese colonial rule and the post- war period. Aside from family history, the diary contains rich information about the economy, politics and cultural activities, especially regarding activities centered around Lin himself. These diaries are not just the most important testament to the life of Lin Xiantang, they also supplement official materials.
