Abstract:
This book is arguably the first monograph to offer an in-depth view of relations between the Chinese Communist Party and merchants, thereby shedding new light on the CCP’s early history. In contrast to previous academic studies that focused on how the CCP mobilized workers and peasants, this book stresses that while the CCP’s goal was to overthrow the bourgeoisie, it did pay considerable attention to establishing a united front with merchants. This strategy had multiple functions. First, it relieved merchants’ concerns about communism. Second, it absorbed the power of merchants, taking advantage of their support to address the dilemma of workers’ strikes. Third, it lessened conflicts of interests between workers and merchants caused by labor unrest. Fourth, it weakened the mass base of KMT rightists while helping the growth of its leftists, thus boosting the development of the proletariat revolution. In addition, the CCP’s united front took full advantage of various fuzzy areas, including those between nationalism and anti-imperialism, the CCP and the KMT, as well as the national revolution and the proletariat revolution.
