《中國中古思想小史》一書原為胡適1931-32年間於北京大學任教的講義，原意是要使聽講之人知道演講主題，故題名《提要》，後因放手增補內容，故改以「小史」為名。本書反映胡適對於中古（先秦至唐宋）思想史的理解，特別是思想的宗教化之上。是書對於胡適思想的探究具有重要的學術價值。
