胡適藉由書寫章實齋其人年譜，具體展現他的史學觀點與實踐。胡適認為一本年譜當展現事主的學問條理、淵源沿革，而不應僅是瑣碎事實的結集。胡適於此年譜中精要摘錄章氏文字、評論，甚至自己也對章氏的思想做出回應，並盡其所能考證年月。章實齋一向賞識年譜的重要，百二十年後，胡適藉由《章實齋先生年譜》重新讓其生命與思想歷程浮出歷史的水面。
