本書以五倫的倫理規範為方法論，並以兩漢隋唐五代宋遼諸朝史料為材料，透過華夷宗藩和親或結義，完成理論結合史料的研究。因和親結合五倫遂有君臣有義、父子有親、夫婦有別、長幼有序、朋友有信的天下規範。因和親而先有漢匈夫婦之邦，後為歷代遵行，遂有翁婿、舅甥及外公孫等輩份關係。隋唐經營突厥有成，被尊為聖人、至尊以及天可汗。五代時更出現敵體的朋友之邦，宋遼則出現百餘年和平的兄弟之邦。五倫典範規範了天下秩序關係。
