    Abstract:
The Proceedings of “Chiang Kai-shek and the Shaping of Modern China”, edited by our fellow Huang Tzu-chin and Pan Kuang-che, is now published by the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. Chiang Kai-shek is one of the most important and controversial figure in the history of the Republic of China. In recent years, due to the ban in old era has been lifted, new historical documents were unveiled. The study of Chiang Kai-shek with strict academic implications opened an unprecedented opportunity and vision. The researchers of Institute of Modern History established "Chiang Kai-shek Research Group" in March 2007. The research group combined with domestic and overseas professional’s cooperation lays a solid and stable foundation for the study and evaluation of Chiang Kai-shek without the stereotype of ideology. Under the support of the Institute of Modern History and the Chiang Ching-kuo International Scholarly Exchange Foundation, the Chiang Kai-shek Research Group, the Japanese Institute of Modern History, and the Chinese Academy of Social Research Council had organized three international conferences in Taipei and Beijing in the years 2009 to 2011. Results are spectacular as the exchange of views, and learning had become a momentary achievement. The book Chiang Kai-shek and the Shaping of Modern China compiles the papers featured in these three international conferences, uncovering the latest specific achievements of Chiang Kai-shek research. Chiang Kai-shek and the Shaping of Modern China contains 2 volumes, 35 essays and a total of 1300 pages. Volume 1: “The growing of a leader”, discusses the rise of Chiang Kai-shek in the political process, and covers Chiang's “Revolutionary career with the vision of State founding”, and “Interpersonal networks and conceptual clash”. Volume 2: “The Great Transformation and Response”, discusses two major themes: Chiang's ”Construction and operation of the authority system”, and “The foreign policy and strategy layout”. The authors of Proceeding including 12 Taiwanese scholars, a Taiwanese-American scholar, 11 Chinese scholars, two Chinese mainland scholars living in Japan, eight Japanese scholars, and a South Korean scholar. All authors are described as the culmination of the experts in the related fields. These scholars academic background and scholarship went inevitably take their own origin, ideological, and ethnic differences in natural stance. But these characteristics did not prevent scholars from various countries founded on a rich historical textual research firm to conduct rigorous academic discussion. The publication of the proceedings shows that the East Asian academic colleagues sought to transcend national boundaries, breaking the shackles of ideology, on the basis of pragmatic consensus of academic research carried out common consensus. This process provides a good example for the internationalization of Chiang Kai-shek study.
