Asia-Pacific History, the Taipei Treaty, and the South China Sea[Abstract] Man-houng Lin PDF 1
Stein Tønnesson and other scholars deem that there was no target for Japan’s renunciation of the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands (S&P) in Article 2 of Chapter 2 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty (SFPT), which is the root cause of the current South China Sea (SCS) controversy. This article points out, however, that the Taipei Treaty (TPT), a sequel to the SFPT, refers to S&P that Japan renounced in the SFPT, while these islands constitute the main part of the SCS. This article discusses: 1) how the handling of S&P as stipulated in Article 2 of the TPT was formed; 2) why the scope of application of Article 2 is precisely the Republic of China in Taiwan; and 3) how S&P in the TPT denotes only the islands and rocks while the SCS remains a sea open for neighboring countries to maintain territorial sea and Exclusive Economic Zones from their coastal baselines, rather than from the islands or rocks of S&P, and for the international society to have a wider set of high seas rights in the SCS.

An Analysis of Air Pollution in Modern Shanghai and Its Causes: The Case of Soot[Abstract] Pei Guangqiang PDF 45
The history of air pollution is an important and difficult problem in China's environmental history research. An analysis of typical cases in modern Shanghai (1840-1949) demonstrates that large-scale air pollution is not a new phenomenon that emerged after 1949, but rather an “old problem” that dates back to the late Qing and the Republican eras. Whether one reviews the geographical system of air pollution sources or estimates soot and sulfur dioxide emissions, the air pollution problem in modern Shanghai has long been very serious. The consumption of large amounts of mineral energy is the root cause of air pollution, and certain irrational arrangements of natural and human factors weaken the ability to absorb, transform, diffuse, and dilute air pollutants, and ultimately make air pollution truly evolve into a severe environmental issue. The study of air pollution in modern Shanghai will not only help to reveal some long obscured historical facts from an empirical point of view, but also help to trace the historical roots of today's air pollution problems. At the same time, it is also of great significance to deepen the research impact of modern Chinese environmental history at the academic level.

The Relationship between the Historical Studies of Chen Yuan and the Society of Jesus[Abstract] Hao Wang PDF 87
Chen Yuan played a prominent part in the transformation of Chinese modern historical studies. Many works have discussed his pioneering exploration into the history of religions in modern China and its great influence. As a Protestant scholar, Chen Yuan produced historical studies that had a very close relationship with Catholic resources, especially those of the Society of Jesus. The friendship between Chen Yuan and many important Chinese Catholics such as Ying Lianzhi, Ma Xiangbo and Xu Zongze greatly facilitated Chen Yuan’s career. This article explores their history and highlights the significance of the Society of Jesus for the Chinese modern discipline of history. On the one hand, Chen Yuan took full advantage of Christian resources in his scholarship; while on the other hand his studies demonstrated a new paradigm for later Chinese historians. Moreover, these works have drawn the serious attention of foreign Sinologists, which demonstrates successful interaction as well as competition between Chinese historians and foreign Sinologists.
