Abstract:
Focusing on the United States’ containment policy and the consolidation of Japan-U.S. Alliance, this book revisits Japan’s economic miracle and national development strategy in the 1960s. It provides a comprehensive account of Japan’s approach to domestic politics and diplomacy under the administrations of prime ministers Hayato Ikeda and Eisaku Sato, paying particular attention to their differences in personality and political ideology. By tracing the shift from Ikeda’s focus on the economy to Santo’s emphasis on politics, the author situates the peaceful rising of post-war Japan in a broader historical context.
