Abstract:
This book comprises the oral recollections of Xu Bing, once active in the world of Taiwanese finance and who was appointed a member of the Japanese House of Peers, and his eldest son Xu Boyan. Xu Bing originally was the “head” of the Lin family in Banqiao, helping run the family business. He came to be on close terms with figures in the Japanese financial community, and with influential people in Manchukuo, and Mainland China He also had a considerable influence on Japanese government policies toward Taiwan. Through this book one can glean some significant historical facts about the system of government in WW2 Taiwan, as well as the relation between Taiwanese gentry and Japanese financiers. As for the post-war era, there is a discussion of the relations between the Taiwanese gentry and the Nationalist government.
