Yuan Weichou is known as the first Taiwanese person to study mineral synthesis. After coming to Taiwan, he served as director of the Geology Department at National Taiwan University, dean of the College of Sciences and director- general of Academia Sinica. In 1976, he was elected an Academia Sinica academician. He has made important contributions to every area of geology, such as mineral synthesis, deposit geology, regional geology, and others.
