    Abstract:
In accordance with his “Chinese learning for fundamental principles and Western learning for practical application.”Chang Chitung's educational reforms sent students overseas to study, introduced Western science and educational systems to reform the existing gentry class, and simultaneously raised a new generation of intellectuals, in order to establish a modernized nation possessed of Chinese cultural characteristics. The Qing era Hubei educational reforms had a significant influence on society in Hubei. It is paradoxical that Chang Chitung never imagined that his hard work would actually encourage popular dissatisfaction with the Qing, helping bring about the 1911 Revolution, but establishing a more turbulent Republic of China.
