Abstract:
At the turn of the twentieth century, Western democratic parties were introduced into China. This book first describes debates about the issue of transplanting political parties to China in the early Republican period, and analyzes the reasons for opposing and supporting the idea of importation. The book then describes the enormous growth of political parties in the early Republic, and analyzes the liberal and conservative parties in the congress. From the angles of political leaders, organized associations, and local power, this book compares and contrasts the two major parties of the early Republic—the Nationalist Party and the Progressive Party. These two parties both used the court system to check the power of the president, causing an inevitable break between the executive and legislative branches.
