Abstract:
Each a leader in the academic world of Taiwan and the United States, Kuo Ting-yee, John King Fairbank and C. Martin Wilbur in 1960-70 actively promoted the study of Chinese modern history. Kuo Ting-yee wanted to elevate the academic standards of Academia Sinica, while Fairbank and Wilbur wanted Academia Sinica to provide a research base for American scholars. Funding from the Ford Foundation facilitated the mutual benefit of these goals, but after the impact of post-war ideology and the Cold War, the three scholars had no choice but to become entangled in political disputes. This book also discusses the White Terror, the anxiety produced by political disagreements, and the obvious and insidious ways that the academy is subject to political constraints.
