1600-1950年的近四百年間，中國女性從傳統跨入近代，無論是傳統女性或近代女性，她們的命運與家庭、社會或國家密不可分，留下的歷史更是曲折多變。這本書收錄的九篇論文，分別從女命批斷、溺女記敘、家庭糾紛、再嫁問題、婚姻策略、婚姻型態、女裝演變、健美觀念與服裝改革運動論述女性歷史，因關注的視角不同，這九篇論文呈現個別差異，也存在著不少共同話題，貫穿在傳統與現代之間。
