《國語文學史》是以胡適於1921年第三屆國語講習所之課程講義為底本，後經數次修改後出油印本，其後屢成北京師範等校授課內容。至1927年，未經胡適本人同意，即為他人印出。由於本書多次修訂，也未屬正式出版物，因此版本甚多。胡適甚至認為這僅是一本「見解不成熟」的作品。話雖如此，是書仍提供了一個思想切面，使吾等得以觀察1920年代胡適對於「國語」文學的認知。
