Abstract:
New People, written by Liang Qichao(1873- 1929), was an important manifesto in the history of Chinese thought. It was published first in a serial format in Yokohama’s Xin Min Cong Bao. It started in 1902, and continued at the end of 1903, after Liang returned from visiting America; the whole work is about 1.2 million characters. New People produced a massive effect in the world of modern Chinese thought; its readers included students and intellectuals in China and Japan, and overseas Chinese, even influencing some ordinary people through newspapers, propaganda, speeches, and other channels. This work was not only well- liked by people when it began to be published: later, after undergoing translation, and being published in other forms, it still enjoyed a broad readership in the 1920s and 1930s.
