Abstract: To grasp the influential Idea of “Manchu-Mongolia” created by the Japanese, it is useful to examine how the Japanese residing in the Manchu colony understood Mongolia in order to know the contents of that idea. The media Manchu Daily News provide important information for this issue. For the stage before the 1911 Revolution, the News mainly reported Mongolia as an undeveloped area, waiting to be civilized. Afterwards, more Japanese reporters visited Mongolia and brought back their own observations as well as Mongolians’ descriptions for themselves. Especially after the Treaty about South Manchuria and East Monglia (1915), Japanese had better legitimacy to visit Mongolia and formally develop the Imperial knowledge. It has been studied that the 1931 Manchurian Incident’s preparation utilized that knowledge.
