族群政治型態的重大變化,推動蒙古、滿洲政治體和傳統「中國」王朝國家形態的轉變,啟動了中國歷史近代轉型的進程。自13世紀末期開始,中國在自身的歷史演進中發端出某種「近代性」,這個現象的外觀標誌之一,就是王朝國家不僅從戰略上,也嘗試從國家政治制度架構、政治制度體系的角度改變傳統農業政治體與內亞游牧勢力長期對立的格局,改善王朝在地緣政治上的重要缺陷,使得王朝由「文明」型態的國家開始轉型為「領土國家」。現代「中華民族」的古代基礎,甚至奠基於既不「中」又不「華」的蒙元。同時,現代中國既不是西歐式民族國家的簡單複製品,也不是元、明、清的簡單複製品。
