摘要：
　　本文將指出馬關條約並未具體羅列「臺灣附屬島嶼」，但日方強調可依據公認海圖或地圖。影響日方1895年1月14日內閣秘密決議的日本海軍，其在英國影響下所編海圖或海誌，指出釣魚臺在甲午戰前為臺灣附屬島嶼，因為馬關條約，才改隸日本。本文接著將探討這套知識，是如何在16─17世紀到18世紀到19世紀東西方地圖與領土知識的幾度交會中積累而成。此研究將呈顯四、五百年來東亞內部關係史及東亞與世界關係史的一些興味。
