Origins of the CCP’s Criticism and Self-Criticism: Neo-Confucianism or Learning from Russia?

Abstract:
The Chinese Communist Party claims that criticism and self-criticism is one of its three excellent styles of work. As time went on, criticism and self-criticism transformed into the infamous “jiantao culture,” playing important roles in many political campaigns, particularly after the founding of the PRC. However, there has not been thorough research to deal with its origins and development. There is a complicated process from its initial operation to the later form that people are familiar with. This article traces the concept of criticism and self-criticism as well as its operations. I would argue that the impacts of the Marxist-Leninist concept and its Soviet operation on the CCP’s criticism and self-criticism are far greater than Neo-Confucianism.
