◎ 此場次為英文演講 Abstract: Examining the modes of transmission and circulation of Chinese traditional knowledge in contemporary societies, I focus on body-based – in particular hand-based – memorization techniques that are used in various fields of knowledge such as Chinese medicine, Taoist rituals, divination, mental calculation, or orientation. These practices can be conceptualized as a common way to model knowledge which pervades areas of technical, religious, and daily-life knowledge. My hypothesis is that hand memory techniques are a kind of traditional tool of data management through which people develop skills and forms of sociability that favor the appropriation and dissemination of a certain type of knowledge. A common trait of these fields of knowledge is that they are either based on Chinese cosmology or are, like Chinese cosmology, structured in the form of data. An underlying question of this on-going project is to understand the contemporary fate of Chinese cosmology, how it produces meaning in contemporary societies, and how it can be a source of political structuring.
