This talk introduces the overarching research question of the monograph: How did the state and other societal sources of power in the society of modern Taiwan between 1949 and 2016 construct the ocean? There are three main parts in this talk. The critical concepts for understanding the question and the theoretical frameworks for undertaking research to pursue the answer are introduced in the first part. Philip Steinberg’s theory of territorial political economy, the Steinbergist Classification and Michael Mann’s IEMP Model are discussed. The second part provides some contextual information for the theme of this monograph, deriving largely from the Routledge Research on Taiwan Series. Finally, the contour of the monograph is sketched out in the third part. Above all, this monograph interprets the uses, regulations and representations of the ocean by the state, ideological, military and economic power sources in modern Taiwan between 1949 and 2016 in order to offer a novel theoretical basis for analysing the politics of marine policy stipulation and implementation. The interpretation by the monograph can also identify and confer meanings on important events of maritime and ocean affairs in Taiwan society.
